antique painted country settle bench 1870

Item Ref

A rustic and decorative antique pine settle / country bench, dating from the mid/end 19th century.
Typical rural style open back rest with spindle and slat decoration. A small carved plaque in the centre, resembling an owl, but likely meant to be floral.
Gently sweeping armrests and straight solid legs, finished in a square pad.
Found in this style from Scandinavia to Hungary, often used in farmhouse kitchens to seat the workers or sleep the children.
The paint is recent, a warm mid blue, in slightly distressed matt finish. The seat has been stripped and wax polished , providing a lovely contrast to the deep sea blue.
The bench has signs of ancient wood worm, mostly in the seat, but has been thoroughly treated with a non toxic method and no activity has been detected. Photos 4, 8, 9 and 10.
A very pretty example of an original country settle, ready to use in your home.
