antique pine bedding chest blanket box in original decorative paint 1870

Item Ref

Rustic and decorated pine boxes are rarely found in undisturbed and original condition which makes this box a pleasing find.
Originating from the Continent, in this case the Balkans, decorated to celebrate a marriage, hence called dowry chests.
This floral style of decoration can be found all over Europe from Scandinavia to Hungary, typically garden designs, as in this case, adorable swirls of stylised floral and leaf designs, tulips, harebells, grains etc on a vibrant mid blue back ground...better known as "Rose Maling" .
The sides of the chest are block painted in the same blue, slightly decorated and the interior of the trunk is natural pine, with signs of usage, but clean.
A candle box on the left hand side.
The condition of the box is good, there are signs of slight wear, mainly on the top, where the painted finish has fadeda little as one would expect.
The trunk has original hinges, but a plinth has recently been added to replace the worn base, all other parts are original, including the castle style lock and key.
