Item Ref

A very substantial and well crafted Swedish Pine cupboard, dating from 1860 to latest 1880.
Usually known as 'house maid's cupboards', because they were kept in the service area of a big house to hold the house maid's tools and equipment.
This particular piece is made from dense Scandinavian pine, originating from the Southern parts of Sweden.
Very well designed and built, two large doors in the top cupboard and two more cupboards below, hence offering enourmous amounts of storage. Both parts have large original shelves and an ingenious ladder system, so shelves can be moved into the exact space needed.
The decorative detail is detailed and quite elaborate:
+ moulded panels in all of the the doors,
+ crisp bold cornice, half turned mouldings, reeded columns,
+ stepped and break fronted carved corbels,
+ original pewter escutcheons top and base,
+ a thick rounded worktop
+ internal strap hinges, doors working very smoothly,
+ original locks and keys, in working order
+ no stuctural damage
+ splits into two halves for access and transport.
There is a small piece of cornice missing, rounded off, on the top, right hand side, see photo 29.
A small repair has been made to the left hand side base moulding, which is quite worn, due to possibly being exposed to some damp conditions, see photo 28.
These are the only places of wear worth mentioning.
The cupboard is otherwise clean, solid and very heavy.
It has only minimal historic worm, treated as always, and some water marking inside the base, see photo 27.
